A statue in Game of Thrones inspired by a wonder of the ancient world
If you watch Game of Thrones even with mild attention, you would have noticed that the ports of Braavos are adorned by a fierce statue of Titan of Braavos with a sword-wielding arm that straddles the entrance to the harbor.

This statue is actually inspired by the Colossus of Rhodes that once triumphantly towered over the city of Rhodes in Ancient Greece some 2000 years ago in 280 BC. Such was the magnificence and grandeur of the 110 feet tall statue that even though it stood for just 56 years, it continues to be regarded as one of Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The statue was of the sun god Helios standing tall while holding a torch in one arm. It was constructed to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over the ruler of Cyprus, Antigonus I Monophthalmus, whose son unsuccessfully besieged Rhodes in 305 BC. It collapsed during the earthquake of 226 BC. Unfortunately, we don’t have any remains of the statue or even drawings to know what it looked it or where it was built.
But this ancient masterpiece has inspired various other structures for centuries, fictional and non-fictional — The most famous being the Statue of Liberty.
