It is much easier than you imagine!

I am sure you would have seen music notes somewhere and wondered what does it even mean. It is a very efficient ‘language’ to facilitate communication between different musicians playing different instruments. There are 3 basic components to notate music.

The staff consists of five horizontal lines on which musical notes lie. The lines and the spaces between them represent different pitches, with the pitch increasing from low to high as move up. For example, this means each line and each space represents a white key on the keyboard (not the black keys).

The Clefs help to tell us which notes correspond to which lines or spaces. The most common clefs are the Treble Clef (also known as the G Clef) and the Bass Clef (or F Clef). The staff line on which the Treble Clef wraps around (shown in red) becomes G, which means the space below becomes F while the space above becomes A. Similarly for the Bass Clef, the staff line between the two dots (shown in red) becomes F. This tells which note to play and when.

Ex. When you see a note on the first line of treble clef followed by the 3rd line, you would play the E and then B on your respective instrument.

The Grand staff is 2 staves with an invisible line in between. The upper staff makes use of a treble clef, while the lower staff uses a bass clef. The invisible line in between in the ‘middle C’. See the image below to visualise the grand staff on a piano.
